Nevada College Application Week (CAW) encourages students to take a significant step toward college by providing assistance and building excitement around the application process.  The goal is to give every graduating senior the opportunity to complete at least one application by the conclusion of Nevada College Application Week.  Hosting a College Application Week event builds a college-going culture and allows your high school the opportunity to ensure all high school seniors strongly consider pursuing a postsecondary education.

WHAT IS COLLEGE APPLICATION WEEK?

College Application Week is a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college.  Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college, low-income students, and students who may have not otherwise seriously considered applying to college.

CAW began in North Carolina as a pilot effort at a single high school in 2005 and has grown to a state-wide effort.  Since then, many other states have joined the efforts.  The American Council on Education (ACE) through support from Lumina Foundation is able to assist states as they implement this initiative, known nationally as the American College Application Campaign (ACAC).  Nevada has jumped onboard and will participate for the second time this fall.

HOST SITE EXPECTATIONS

Schools interested in hosting will be required to set aside time and space during the school day for graduating seniors to complete at least one application for any university, community college or trade school.  Assistance and encouragement for students and their parents will be provided by high school, college and community staff and volunteers.  Host sites will spend the weeks leading up to Nevada CAW helping students identify the right institutional fit, drafting essays, and securing all information needed to complete their applications during CAW.  The Nevada CAW State Coordinator, Mallory Levins, will provide a resource manual for all host sites to assist with the organization of the event, provide assistance with volunteer recruitment, and deliver a mandatory training for site coordinators sometime in September 2014.
